It will occasionally have additional steps that are needed rebuilding the world. You should also look down toward the bottom of this file for a section called COMMON ITEMS and read this. Also, check out section 21.4 of the FreeBSD handbook (on FreeBSD web site). It gives the instructions for synchronizing your sources and rebuilding everything. But, going from 4.0 to -stable is lots of trips to single user mode (necessary when installing userland and using mergemaster to update /etc). It may be better to make the trip and do a fresh install of 4.8 (and then use cvsup to get to 4.9-RC). But, if you really want to do it remotely (and you have remote console access), it is possible to update via the source. But it will be a lot of work. Richard Coleman richardcoleman@mindspring.com F.
