Both the external preprocessor and header files need extra files (gcc 
and cpp) to be present. I'm not using gcc, so that is why I made that 
reservation about the binutils. Something like a pure makefile
system solution (or filesystem check /proc ?) would even be better.

Hmm, maybe this doesn't matter on FreeBSD, since IIRC gcc is part 
of base, and is always installed?
