ALT+Fn, n=3D1, ... 8 will give you virtual terminals, ALT+F9 brings you back to X. The virtual terminals are defined in /etc/ttys (it also as a man page: ttys(5)). Other graphical login managers (like XFree's xdm) are launched =66rom that file, but for some reason that does not work with gdm (thus the startup script).
