I'm using DES only because my FreeBSD machine is a NIS client of a
Solaris 2.5 NIS server. I don't know about Apache use of DES. But you
don't have to get a different kernel to use DES since DES installation
consist of reinstalling few libraries, 1 header file, man pages and 1
binary.
