Thats correct, and there's no way around that really, unless you have softupdates enabled and mount it dangerously and do a background fsck (although some will warn of impending doom here). There's a lot of ways to do this, but what you sound like you want is a shared block device, with a single reader/writer to that disk, with a 'spare' machine ready to take over that reader/writer role at a moments notice. Does that sound right?
