Try losing that '1' on the end there.

Not sure why it does this though.

I'd tell you to do,

# route flush; route add default <whatever>

All in one command line to prevent the loss of the connection, but in
this case it would not work. The 'route flush' hangs when I try it
(but when interuptted, the default routes are both gone).
