Currently there are two ports of XFree86-4. One is "ports/x11/XFree86-4" and the other is broken up into the component parts, such as "ports/x11/XFree86-4-libraries", "ports/x11/XFree86-4-clients", "ports/x11-servers/XFree86-4-Server", etc. They do not use the same set of patches and have two different maintainers. It seems that ports that use the XFREE86_VERSION=4 variable have a dependency on XFree86-4-libraries and there are many more patches in the XFree86-4-libraries patches subdirectory than in the XFree86-4 patches subdirectory. A quick look indicates that some of the extra patches in the XFree86-4-libraries patches subdirectory are necessary for the split up of the XFree86 build. Although the XFree86-4 port contains the useful i810 patch. Also, patch-9 from XFree86-4 is not in XFree86-4-libraries. Is there a reason this situation has developed or should this be rectified somehow? Also, I noticed that the libraries build with no optimization, the CFLAGS are left out. Is this intentional? All other parts of the build use CFLAGS.
