Didn't Netscape [or was it Maxis] go on record saying that they weren't 
going to go out and support non-commercial operating systems anymore?

I suspect that BSD/OS support is available due to BSDI more than the 
other BSDs put together. Not necessarily due an overwhelming installed 
base of one of the other, but due to the good karma they get for 
supporting another "commercial" os.
