It really sounds like a driver problem.  radeon doesn't explicitly 
support the 5000-series cards, but I thought it would work.  Check 
/var/log/Xorg.0.log.

You can try the radeonhd driver, or even the vesa driver.

Right.  It's probably not an input problem.
