Thanks very much for your time, as well as the information. I should think that your suggestion of updating the Handbook is an excellant idea! For a lot of us, this proves to be the first port of call for information and help, and from my own experience, its at times disheartening to come across procedures in there that turn out to be either out of date, or ambiguous in its reading. I'm off installing gnome at the moment. I'm sure to come back to the list seeking confirmation of the procedure for setting gnome as the default desktop to load when entering "startx". Thanks again.
