Since I was in a hurry, I didn't pick any stealthy options, which causes a bunch of ICMP_BANDWITH_LIMIT messages. The weird thing is that this hoses the serial console; it just turns to garbage characters. I have to kill and restart a getty process on the console to get it to work again. Sorry I don't have my kernel config handy. The only relevant thing not implied in the above is that I was monkeying around (unsuccessfully) with every option I could find to up the serial console speed. At the moment, it's not harmful, and I will definitely try removing the speed-related options, but can anyone explain how this could even happen? It's quite reproducible.
