I think it might be possible to work around this situation by : 1) Change every perl script in the base system so that the shebang line reads #!/usr/bin/perl5.00503 instead of just plain old "#!/usr/bin/perl"; and 2) Install perl5.6.1 but tell that you don't want to include any older perl libraries in the @INC array. I haven't done any investigation into this whatsoever (in fact this is the first time I've been near a computer since I thought of this), but I can't immediately think of any reasons why this would be unfeasible.
