It annoys people. As for your question, the wires in a TP cable *do* have to be crossed (so transmit at one end goes to receive at the other), but normally the hub does this for you. So the cables between the machines and your hub are wired 'straight through' and the hub does all the necessary crossing of wires. If, on the other hand, you don't have a hub and are connecting directly between two computers, the cable must be wired in the crossed-over way. If you don't want to bother making up the special cables, you can get 4- or 8-port 10baseT hubs quite cheaply these days. I think SMC make one.
