If you have a WinModem, it won't work under FreeBSD. It is not a true modem - it uses software emulation to imitate the behaviour of a real hardware modem, and software to support this is not available for FreeBSD. (Does anyone know if it's WIP?). Some internal ISA modems are true modems, but chances are you have a WinModem - sorry :o( You would be best off getting an external modem (which are all "real"), and forgetting about the internal one.
