To make this rc.conf setting take effect without rebooting: ifconfig_fxp0="inet 192.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.248" you would execute: ifconfig fxp0 inet 192.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.248 Try and go through rc.network though and understand exactly what is happening.
