How exactly are you connecting the ImageMate? I've found that my CF cards are not hot pluggable. The USB is, but the CF card is not. I have to insert the CF card into the reader, then plug the reader into my computer. Then I can mount the filesystem, work, and unmount. Then I pull out the USB cable before removing the CF card.
