Greetings,

I posted a message on Sat 4/5 (and a similar message to isp@freebsd.org)
regarding this topic but I haven't received a single response yet.

I'm becoming a little frustrated trying to figure out how to deliver mail
to the correct userid with 2 exceptions. My ISP will deliver all email in
the form of <anything>@bsampley.vip.best.com or bsampley@best.com to my
mailbox at Best Internet. I'm using 3.0-current (after the lite2 merge)
and using fetchmail to retrieve the email. I use fetchmail because it
will easily retrieve email from more than 1 remote site, but the problem
is fetchmail will only deliver the mail to the userid that called it. If
I su to root and call fetchmail from an xterm window, it will still be
delivered to the original userid, not to root. If fetchmail is started by
/etc/rc.local, then all email is delivered to root. Basically I want to
setup the following aliases:

bsampley@best.com ---> burton@bsampley.vip.best.com
bsampley@haywire.csuhayward.edu ---> burton@bsampley.vip.best.com

I want all other mail delivered to <the correct
userid>@bsampley.vip.best.com

My hostname is defined as "bsampley.vip.best.com" and I have a static IP
address. I have built and installed smail and exim from the ports
collection, but I can't figure out how to get either one to work on-demand
when called from fetchmail using the -mda option in the .fetchmailrc file.
I have experimented in commenting out the sendmail section of the
/etc/sysconfig file only to find out that fecthmail will not work without
it (because it needs SMTP). I believe that smail is designed to be called
as sendmail, but I'm not sure. When I check TOP it reports that sendmail
is running. Regardless of what it's called, if it's running in the daemon
mode as called from /etc/sysconfig then fetchmail will deliver to the
userid that called fetchmail.

I have attempted to add the above aliases to the /etc/aliases file (both
with and without the local domain name) and then executed mkaliases.
There are no errors reported by mkaliases, but if I try newaliases, then
I get a message saying mail can't be aliased to another domain.

How do I get the local mail delivered? If I need to install something
else (like maybe procmail) I'll do it as long as it can be configured to
use ppp on-demand to call my ISP at regular intervals to D/L my email to
my local system.

FWIW, this box is also configured as a gateway for 1 Lose95 client. I'm
trying to setup an email address for this client.

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
