Thanks to all who offer help with my current situation. The
problem turned out to be the video card. Its a JAX 8241/VL-41
801/805 S3 card, and is the cause of the problem.

I placed an old cirrus card in and things are working again.

This cirrus is not equipped to handle Xwindows, so I'm off to
find a more compatable video card.
