If you can mount it for data ok:

#mount /cdrom

then try starting your audio software specifying
device i.e. :

#workman -c /dev/wcd0a

Or whatever player you use - you can read its
manual pages

#man <player name>


If you put the correct one for your player into
.xinitrc / .xsession, you can
have it ready to play when X starts.
