I just had that problem and solved it scientifically:-)  I just configured
it with the most basic options, imap, mysql, gd, gz, gettext, if I remember
correctly and it compiled perfectly and is running.  I plan to go back and look
at the patches but I needed it to run immediately and I'm like a kid in a 
candy store, I want everything when I am given options.
