After checking the es1371.c file in source, I noticed that it had the patch installed. I opened up the box and to my surprise, the cord connecting the CDROM to the SoundCard had been disconnected. After plugging it in, everything just worked. I use cdcontrol for playing CD's. I know, it is old and may appear kludgy, but if works great at the console. I've never tried xmms before. I still can't figure out how the card works when it appears that the IRQ assigned in dmesg differs from that shown on sndstat. Perhaps a question for another email. Thanks for the help.
