While the presence or absence of the GPL does not affect the security of the software per se, it can and should affect one's choice among solutions to the security problem that had been posed (of which there are several). If someone said, "Don't use that, it's Microsoft-proprietary," I'm sure you wouldn't take it amiss, right?
