i thank you and jonathan for the info, i'll do a backup of the system before
i attempt this. :)  i would only be going to 3.4-stable to 4.0-release if i
were to use the cd, but if i take a chance (why not, you only live once) and
do it with cvsup and make, i'd be going from -stable to -stable (since the
first thing i do after installing -release is to cvsup -stable and rebuild)
