I even know where these terms came from. They're typewriter terms .

When you reached the end of the line on the paper being typed, you had to
crank a lever to roll the paper one line up (LINE FEED)
and use the lever to return (push) the carriage to the first position of
the new line (CARRIAGE RETURN).
