If missed the beginning of this question, but if you're having trouble
getting the ethernet to work, and you think that you're bridging, the
answer is to use 'host' mode in the vmware configuration, not 'bridge'.
The vmnet module takes care of the bridging behind the scenes.

I installed vmware on a 4.5 box a few days ago, and it worked just find
with this configuration.
