Insted of applying --localstatedir=3D/var to Makefile's CONFIGURE_ARGS I de= cided to patch work/refdb-1.0.3/configure and provide a patchfile. It seems to ha= ndle make makeplist easier (in my case). Further, I followed the handbook and added OPTIONS_SUB=3Dyes which should t= hen provide commenting out all stuff introduced when building with OPTIONS DOCS= set to yes - when understood correctly, one has to prefix those additional line= s in pkg-plist with %%DOCS%% - I'm not sure, the ports system gets more confusing every time something is added ...
