Thank you very kindly all, Yes, I think I messed up my password database files with mergemaster, I re-generated passwd file and now I can actually "finger" on root ;-). Try having a look at /etc/passwd and /etc/master.passwd and check if they look correct. If they do try regenerating your password database with pwd_mkdb. -- Simon L. Nielsen
