Just a note to thank you, Brett Smith and Brian Ristuccia for the good advice. My new Barracuda 9.1 GB UW-LVD is humming along nicely using a 68->50 pin connector on a narrow bus, with sustained transfer rates of 10.5 MB/s. It's quiet and plenty fast.
