Still seeing how many people have problems, I'll stay with fam for the time being. Also I just recognized that I never used fam in my life. Today I tested x11-fm/pcmanfm and it complained about gamin/fam not running. The author told me that other programs simply use kernel functions to monitor the system when fam is not present. The fam manpage states that it has to be run as root. So well, for all those who want to stay with fam for now and actually use it. I have an sh skript attached that can be put into /usr/local/etc/rc.d/ and activated by adding fam_enable=3D"YES" to your /etc/rc.conf .
