The problem was, afterall, a problem with the environment variables. According to the first issue of FreeBSD News, that is the most common problem. Embarrassing. Anyway, thanks for the help. For future reference of others who have this problem, the winning combination was: setenv CLASSPATH .:/usr/local/share/java:/usr/local/share/kaffe/classes.zip setenv KAFFEHOME /usr/local/share/kaffe setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH /usr/local/lib:/usr/lib Thanks. -Steve
