See if maxtor has a drive checking utility. Some manufacturers like seagate have a utility you burn on cd and boot off it. It allows you to check the drives on the system independantly of the host os. It may not be a final solution but is a step in the direction of diagnosing the fault. If the info on the drives was not backed up it obviously was not important .
