I think that you guys better check with 
Rob Mallory <rmallory@wiley.csusb.edu> his mpeg_play compiled with
whatever patches he has for gcc is about 20% faster than then
the gcc-2.7.2p6 that I have over here .

At the very lease someone should try to benchmark the new 
gcc-2.7.2p6
