Much of the discussion here has to do with networking and servers. You might want FreeBSD if you will require assistance in these areas. Linux newsgroups such as alt.os.linux and comp.os.linux.misc, on the other hand, often dwell on problems with the setup of stand-alone systems such as desktop and ppp setup. It appears to me that Red Hat may support more PC hardware than FreeBSD. My inexpensive Canon BJC-250 printer works with Red Hat 6.0, and I don't know whether it will work with FreeBSD. Don't think that your choice will be "written in stone." Once you are comfortable with the process of installing, it is relatively easy to delete your partitions and try another os if you aren't satisfied with your first choice, which is what I'm doing right now, having wiped Red Hat and cracked my FreeBSD book to get ready to install it this weekend. Red Hat definitely is easy for a beginner with little knowledge of Unix to install, but as soon as you start to work with it you have to learn the same things that you must know to use FreeBSD. For myself, as a home user, I think it will be a long time before I test the limitations either of Red Hat or FreeBSD. The limits I struggle with are my own. Again, if this is no help to you, be more specific about what you want to do with your system if you want advice from the professionals. Good luck to you, Brett G.
