You are correct, Donald. CD-RW media reflects less light than CDRs and normal CDs. In order for a driver/player to read CD-RW media, they have to have an amplifier to increase the light output. Otherwise the reflected light levels are often too low to generate an adequate electrical signal. Most newer drives and high-quality players come with such amplifiers. Drives that do have them are usually labeled as being able to read CD-RW. The low-reflectivity problem may also occur with cheap CDR media (e.g., the green-tinted ones).
