Someone named Bill Wagner has emailed me telling me that he has a very similar problem and also uses the VIA chipset for IDE. It was his theory that FreeBSD 5.0 and earlier have a "generic" mode for operating VIA chipsets, but this was removed in later 5.x releases. If the maintainers of FreeBSD just want to say: "we won't support this", then I'll just live with 4.X. I can't speak for Bill or others.
