I don't suppose that you've rebuilt ppp with symbols?  (eg, added -g
to the CFLAGS when building ppp).  

One you've done this, please go into more detail than "[gdb] does not
work".  Supply an exact transcript.  Make sure you do "info registers"
and "info frame" in addition to "backtrace"
