I've got a Zonet ZFM5600 PC Card modem that works fine. Other PC Card (or USB?) modems should also work, as long as they look like a serial port peripheral to the OS and aren't winmodems. If you have the port expander or docking station for your R40, you should be able to connect an external modem to the serial port.
