thanks for the reply..

/usr/src/sys/compile is empty but for a file named .keep_me 

and yes, i've been following -STABLE (aka RELENG_4) since 4.0 too, 
and never had major problems. 

so how come that the userland ipf wont get updated? i've done
a lot of buildworlds and never ran into errors...

is there a way to make sure that the userland ipf really gets updated?
