But to stay on topic, I never had any luck at all with xdm, nor any skill, as if that would help, but I never thought to try running it as root until I'd given up and gone back to using startx. suid mght be dangerous, reasons why? (this is a chance for that essay on the hazards of suid, wmd, ssh, and robotech to see the light of day) cos chmod 4766 /usr/X11R6/bin/xdm ain't hard to type . . . I fear.
