more info on the 10.2 GB caper... put the drive in a different system, (another WIN98 sacrifice,) different motherboard, different drive geometry settings, (LBA and NORMAL,) same results: at W in the partition phase it seems to work alright. then after defining the slices, it fails with Unable to swap to /dev/ad0s1b: device not configured. This may cause... (this is the swap slice) and finally... Unable to make new root filesystem on /dev/rad0s1a!
