Buildworld does not build the kernel, that is why there are also two
kernel related targets of "buildkernel" and "installkernel" which
build and install a GENERIC kernel.

It is recommended. Although I have successfully done it in multi user
mode when no one was logged in and most services were shutdown ( only
sshd and a few other services were running ). I would not do this
unless I had easy access to the console though. (The machines were,
and still are, 300 feet away)

I found cvsup'ing and building from source to be completely painless,
although your mileage may vary.
