When you are running a release version of FreeBSD, updates to the base system include only security and critical patches. You can get the current -p version by using the freebsd-update utility: # freebsd-update fetch install depending on whether a kernel update is included, a reboot may or may not be needed (it will be needed in your case). For more details about the different available versions of FreeBSD and the use of the freebsd-update utility, please read Handbook's Chapter 24, esp. section 24.2.2: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/updating-upgrading-freebsdupdate.html
