They disappeared from FreeBSD 4-CURRENT in Nov 1999.
(So they aren't in any of the 4.x releases.)

I am not sure, but if you check the archives for the freebsd-arch
mailing list there was a long discussion about this in Oct. 1999
that might answer your question.
