The sound (and everything else except the wifi) worked great until I upgraded to CURRENT or 5.4. I use the snd_via8233 driver which is, according to the Hardware Notes, also compatible with the via 8235 chipset. With 5.4 each time I tried to play a sound, I got a beeeeep instead until I stop it. I also got the following error on my console: pcm0:play:1: play interrupt timeout, channel dead In both cases I first tried with the GENERIC kernel to which I added a couple of options to support the sound, GEOM encryption. I also disabled the sound option in the kernel and used "kldload snd_driver" instead. The result was the same (did not work). The first time I did a full upgrade (kernel, world, mergerman...). Then I downgraded back to 5.3. Later I retried but only installed the new kernel(s) (make buildkernel KERNCONF=MYKERNEL, make installkernel...). I also tried to install 5.4 but compiled with via8233.c from 5.3. The result was exactly the same (did not work). Sometimes the IRQ of the sound card is 10, sometimes 22 regardless of which kernel is used. Here are the options I add at the bottom of the GENERIC kernel conf to make MYKERNEL: ################################## # disk encryption options GEOM_BDE # sound device sound device "snd_via8233" # NDIS WIFI support # this is to enable the wrapper for win drivers # it causes the system to crash, #options NDISAPI #device ndis #device wlan # CD RW scsi interface device atapicam device scbus device cd device pass # FireWall options IPFIREWALL options IPFIREWALL_VERBOSE options IPFIREWALL_VERBOSE_LIMIT options IPFIREWALL_DEFAULT_TO_ACCEPT Here are the system messages for 5.4 (sound does not work) ********************************************************** ********************************************************** cat /dev/sndstat (kernel 5.4): ****************************** FreeBSD Audio Driver (newpcm) Installed devices: pcm0: at io 0x1000 irq 10 kld snd_via8233 (5p/1r/4v channels duplex default) dmesg | grep pcm (kernel 5.4): ****************************** pcm0: port 0x1000-0x10ff irq 10 at device 17.5 on pci0 pcm0: pcm0:play:1: play interrupt timeout, channel dead pcm0:play:1: play interrupt timeout, channel dead pcm0:play:1: play interrupt timeout, channel dead Full dmesg (kernel 5.4) *********************** Copyright (c) 1992-2005 The FreeBSD Project.
