After that it is not possible to return to the console. No combination of ALT/Fx or CTRL/ALT/Fx works. Remote login via ssh shows that the system is working, but I can return to console only after a reboot. /var/log/Xorg.0.log shows X tries to set screen size to 300x230, which is not right.
