That said > it's the sun that's borked here, not us. If we make the change that we are considering, then you will set TERM=xterm on your FreeBSD box. Things will run in color on your FreeBSD box. When you ssh to your Sun, the inherited value of TERM will work correctly, albeit without color. This seems to me like the best possibile situation. To reiterate: If we change termcap on FreeBSD so that "xterm" contains color support, then you set TERM=xterm everywhere and never use "xterm-color". The only times this is bad are: - If you have an xterm on some foreign platform which is screwed up by escape codes. None have been reported thus far. - If you log in to a machine which is like FreeBSD is now; you won't get color unless you switch back to "xterm-color". The goal is to have TERM=xterm do the color thing when possible and not give the problem you describe by setting TERM=xterm-color and logging in to a Sun.
