Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-questions@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk Hi, I have just bought a second hand 486DX2 (AMD) with 8Mb RAM and a 340 Mb harddisk. I have a 3Com 3C509B network card. I installed FreeBSD via ftp from ftp2.uk.freebsd.org, although I couldn't get X-Windows from there - I had to change to ftp.uk.freebsd.org. I tried to compile a kernel myself. It stopped with a compiling error. I though i might have inadvertently screwed up the conf file, so I tried the GENERIC conf file. However this won't compile either. I get one of two messages. The first is: ioconf.h:12: warning: previous declaration of `npxintr' /var/tmp/co001535.s: Assembler messages /var/tmp/co001535.s:713: Error: Invalid character (0xf) in opcode /var/tmp/co001535.s:714: Rest of line ignored. First ignored character is `,'. at which point it stopped. The next error is even more worrying: /var/tmp/cc000403.s: Assembler messages: /var/tmp/cc000403.s:1075: Error: no such 386 instruction `t' I have had several like this, with slight varaitions, one was hinting that my 'puter didn't understand ANY 386 instructions! :( I am totally stumped. It looks to me like an incompatibility with the AMD chip. If anybody can help me I'd be very grateful. -Thanks.
