Found my answers to d/ling the kernel source during a novice installation. Since I also have some other problems now (due to trying to fix things ;( ), I think I will start doing a completely fresh installation. Thanks for all your help. ps-have those on the committee thought of a mail list for newbies (similar to what linux has)? It might take some of the load off this list. Just curious. Mike
