For the workload that I often run (FreeBSD "make world" :-) I seem to remember about a 10% improvment when I switched one of my systems from a 512KB half-speed cache (orig Athlon) to a 256KB full-speed cache Thunderbird where the processor speed was the same. I certainly wouldn't argue that a different job mix could produce a different or even the opposite result, it's just that it appears that "make world" isn't one of them.
