What's your "uname -a" look like?  -current?

5.0.1 was a patch release for version of GNU/Linux that had recent
OpenSSL versions?

For example, 5.0.1 wouldn't compile on RHEL5/Fedora12, but 5.0.1 may be
required for FreeBSD -current with OpenSSL 0.9.8n+ in -current
